Wheelbarrow Power Rules!

On Sat 7th May 17 willing volunteers joined forces to finish off phase one of the Tuppenny Barn Education Centre.  The primary task was to fill the car tyres (forming part of the foundations) with scalpings, tamper the materials in & keep filling until each tyre was a solid mass.  We can happily report  the mission was completed and everyone felt a sense of achievement of what could have been a fairly dull task!  Refreshments were kindly supplied by Diane Goodman who did us proud – light tasty scones & jam for mid morning break, sausages & salad for lunch in home made rolls & then finally chocolate or fresh starwberry sponges with a cup of tea at the end of the task.  It was worth coming just to sample the excellent food!

A huge thank you to all those who participated giving up their day to the project.  It was great to meet so many new supporters.  Roll on the next volunteer day……..follow the blog for details.

Nick checking our handy work!

The workers!

Alongside this weeks other great produce we will have -

  • Salad leaf
  • Onions
  • Potatoes
  • Carrots
  • Asparagus
  • Rhubarb

Come along to the farm shop on Thursday between 10am and 5pm and see us.

It has been a very busy week at the field with lots going in including -

  • Baby leaf lettuce
  • Cauliflower
  • Pointed cabbage
  • Cucumbers
  • Courgettes
  • A number of different squash

In the poly tunnel we have planted the last of the sweet peppers and chillies.

We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a £5000 grant from Chichester Harbour Conservancy SDF fund to go towards Phase two of the education centre build.  The Conservancy has been tremendous in their support of the project as with the grant we received from them for 2010/11 it enabled us to start Phase One.

Planted This Week

This week we have put the first of the tomatoes in the polytunnel.  These included

  • Gardeners delight
  • Santasian baby plums
  • Celine large plums
  • Sungold cherry
  • Round Shirley’s
  • Cherry Sakura’s
At last the education centre build commences! On 25th Mar we had our foundation ceremony with Chairman John Ridd from Chichester District Council laying some of the shingle within the tyres. The tyres form part of the foundations and comprise of 90 stacks. They will be filled with shingle topped up with scalpings.

We are hoping to build a recycled greenhouse from 1500 2litre plastic bottles. Lyndhurst junior School have helped launch the bottle appeal by donating over 200 bottles on their recent visits to the field. Any bottles to help us in this project would be greatly appreciated. Either drop them in at the field or we can collect.
